The story behind Vineyard
The Yarra Valley is wine country — one of Victoria’s most celebrated cool-climate regions, and a familiar landscape from years of living nearby. This vineyard, painted from a postcard, is the last of the small Yarra Glen series.
These small works were practical as much as anything else. Modest dimensions meant lower material costs and less time, and a painting priced at a few hundred dollars seemed more likely to find a buyer than a large-scale work. A local newsagent agreed to display some of the paintings on a large empty wall — the Vanquish among them, priced at $2000. Someone offered $100. The board alone cost $20; the paint and brushes considerably more. The offer was declined.
After this series, Yarra Glen was left behind. The paintings that follow come from a different time and place.
