The story behind Flowers
Flowers was painted as a commission for someone close. The relationship deteriorated during the making of it. The painting was completed and handed over regardless.
The subject matter was not a natural choice. Still life florals sit at the opposite end of the spectrum from CNC machines and soldiers in East Timor. But the technical demands are real — white petals against a dark background require a sustained command of tonal subtlety, and roses in particular are extraordinarily complex forms. The painting holds up.
This was the last painting completed for several years. A serious hand injury, ongoing financial hardship, and the indifference of the art world had accumulated to a point where continuing felt pointless. The unfinished canvases from that period were abandoned (for a time).
