The story behind Carolyn 1

Carolyn had asked to be painted. A series of photographs was taken with that purpose in mind, and this one — shot at the Yarra Glen cemetery, a woman on a bench under dappled summer light — had the most interesting composition. It became the first of two portraits.

The scale is small, the same modest format as the fruit still life from the same year, and the foliage presented a genuine technical challenge at that size. Every leaf, every patch of dappled light through the canopy, resolved down to a surface not much larger than a piece of notebook paper.

When the finished painting was shown to its subject, she hated it. The second portrait received the same response. These things happen.
