This is an incredibly beautiful abstract painting and is about the way Bert thinks how the world should be.
When Bert dies he will be happy that he lived it without causing to much harm to anyone else. But….
As for has he achieved his goals in life, his personal ambitions; Bert has not. In this sense he has failed to achieve a meaningful life.
The tonal values in this work are particularly notable. There’s very few lighter tones at all. He suspects that it was a subconscious decision that was made when he painted this and relates to the previous point.

The story behind The meaning of life
Too many people think the question of ‘what is the meaning of life’ is a difficult one to answer. I have never had any doubts as to what the answer is. It is simply – to live as independently as possible amongst a community without hurting others.
To live independently as possible, a person must firstly always have an absolute independent ability to make ethical decisions free from the constraints of what may be normative value systems. As long as the choices a person takes have no reasonable negative impact on others, then they should be free to think and act for themselves.
With that being said, those actions should always be made with the option of being done solely for the benefit of the individual, or for the benefit of the community the person is a part of. With this in mind, most people will opt to fulfill both needs at the same time – serving themselves and at the same helping time those around them.
For me I have mostly fulfilled this requirement – however like every person who has ever lived – I have sometimes done the wrong thing by myself and others in the community of which I am a part of. I firstly consider myself to be a human, secondly an anarcho-communist, thirdly an artist. With all of these three things come rights and responsibilities.
