This painting is of an American racehorse named Bernardini. The original image came from a magazine on racehorses (Bluebloods – May 2009).
This was a commissioned painting which when completed was never paid for. The artist was even asked to paint out the name of the horse after the painting was finished, despite being initially instructed to copy the photo exactly. Once it had been repainted (the area of red covering the saddle), the commissioner still led Bert on a merry dance and Bert never got paid.
The depiction of horses is a somewhat common theme in the photorealism genre. The best was Richard McLean.
