The story behind

Self portrait 2002

Bert Ernie had always admired the many self-portraits of Rembrandt and with that in mind he set about painting himself. The source photo was taken from a very low resolution digital camera – 640×480 pixels! The surface of things can be quite hard to paint – like human hair. This painting is an early painting in the artists oeuvre and the skill level required to create a truly life like painting was not yet fully developed.

It is however an honest painting. Being overweight (and conscious about it) didn’t stop the artist from showing his flaws. Those multiple chins could have been minimized but they weren’t. It was far more important to be as realistic and honest.
